Independent Film Coolness

Following another season of VFF and voting for the Independent Spirit Awards, I’ve got indie film on the brain.  In upcoming posts, I’d like to talk about how independent film appeals to me personally.  I don’t make films (independently or otherwise), but have decades of experience with them—screening, reading, writing, teaching, interviewing, programming—and want to share some of what I’ve learned and loved.

For some readers, what I’ll be saying may seem obvious; hopefully, instead, it’ll be affirmation.  For other readers, I hope to introduce this exciting parallel universe of film, or to help explain why it matters.  For me, this is a chance to talk about independent film in a more detailed, wide-ranging, and personal way than I usually do here.

And it’s a chance to hear from you.  Feel free to post a comment anytime or let me know if you’d like to write something longer to publish here.

I’m calling this series “Independent Film Coolness,” a double meaning and attraction for us in the Valley, where both the hip and the hot appreciate the cool!
