We had so much fun at Columbia College Hollywood in June, for Meet The Programmers, that we're doing it again next Wednesday, August 2, for an evening all about The Business of Licenses and Permissions. Join the VFF team as we navigate the complicated world of copyrights, licenses and permissions with our panel of experts:

Linda Nelson - Distribution Linda and her partner, Michael Madison, built a distribution company, Indie Rights, from scratch ten years ago and now represent more than 500 films globally. They maintain offices at AFM and Cannes.

Dean Rusu - Copyrights Dean is a graduate of York University with a background in Business Affairs and international distribution for studios such as Warner Bros., Universal and Paramount. Creatively, Dean is a writer, director and producer of documentaries, dramatic short and features.

Kevin Laffey - Music Clearances Kevin specializes in Music clearances and has consulted for both studios and independent projects - including Lionsgate, Showtime, The Weinstein Company, Sony, Warner Bros and Paramount Pictures.

Moderated by Ken Storer: A graduate of Vassar College, Ken began his began his career with the DGA, ABC, and Disney, before landing on a desk at ICM working for the head of Television Packaging. There he became assistant to the showrunner of Law & Order: SVU at Universal Studios and eventually a staff writer for three seasons.

Acting, Improv & Hustling...a Free Workshop with Robert Amico

Whether you're curious or a seasoned SAG professional, join The Valley Film Festival and VFF Advisory Board member, Robert Amico, as we have fun with acting, improv, and networking with peers and colleagues. 

Participants will loosen up with some improv & talk theory exercises, and read commercial copy. We'll also review what makes a headshot stand out, hustling techniques for jobs & an agent, and most importantly, building lasting relationships in this crazy business. 

Robert Amico is a working actor and film producer with over four decades of experience. Robert studied under Lee Strasberg and Shelley Winters, and currently teaches a 3-hour Saturday morning acting class at Reactors Studio in NoHo. 

There is a limit to 20 participants, however, feel free to swing by to watch and hang out. There's no pressure.

Participants should bring their headshot, a short monologue, and confirm reservation through Eventbrite.

Crowdfunding... a Free Industry Panel Hosted by Aaron Kaiser

Over the last several years, crowdfunding has opened up new avenues for indie filmmakers to raise the production budgets for their projects. With high-profile successes, such as Rob Thomas' Veronica Mars and Zach Braff's Wish I Was Here, the door appears wide open to use audience participation to green light. To further expand the playing field, the SEC has recently released regulations for equity crowdfunding and the JOBS Act. 

Join The Valley Film Festival and filmmaker Aaron Matthew Kaiser for a panel discussion about crowdfunding + the JOBS Act. We will discuss:

- What you should consider when planning a crowdfunding campaign.
- What to look for in a crowdfunding platform and what type of campaign is right for your project.
- What are the common mistakes filmmakers run into in crowdfunding campaigns and how to avoid them.
- What equity crowdfunding is and whether it should be an option for your project.

Our panelists include:

- ALEXIA ANASTASIO, VFF alumnae, actress and filmmaker who has crowdfunded three projects since 2010

- JUSTIN ZAGRI, VFF alumnus, makes his living freelancing in the entertainment industry and has recently succeeded in raising $24,000 through Kickstarter for his short film "Severus Snape and the Marauders"

- LYSANDRA PETERSSON is a Screenwriter, Director, Editor, and the co-founder of the production company Deep Structure Productions

- DAVID RAIKLEN is a Producer-Composer-Crowdfunder who has raised thousands of dollars online for projects around the world

"The Color Purple" in Los Angeles via New York

Our friends at The New York Times Film Club are at it again! This time they're premiering the digital master of The Color Purple, directed by Steven Spielberg. 


The screening is preceded by a conversation with director, T.J. Martin, who just snagged himself an Academy Award this year for the documentary, Undefeated, and includes a cocktail reception.
